Last But Not Least: Day Sixteen

Bildschirmfoto 2016-05-09 um 15.06.45

Today there was a steep hill and a castle. There was a shop that sold dust from space and Berty Bott’s All Flavoured Beans. There was a girl from a Spanish beach, and there were stories. Today was made up of Once Upon a Times, of things that happened a long time ago and have stopped happening, and some things that are still happening. Memories becoming dreams and dreams becoming memories, and a reality interwoven with stories and histories.

Last But Not Least: Day Twelve

Bildschirmfoto 2016-04-10 um 17.57.34

My goal has been to write at least one sentence a day, and so far I have always written more than just the one, but I keep thinking that maybe one sentence might have said it all; yet, if I let this sentence stand alone, it is not going to help me remember Cambridge very well. When did my diary become a place of endless rambling? I’ve got Inga for that. Not to self: this is the reason you don’t travel alone!

Three days ago I was being poetic, today my brain is vomitting all over the place.

It’s really pretty here (wow, what a precise description!), and I had a Nutella/Marshmallow crêpe, and the guy selling it to me flirted a little bit which, in turn, made me feel pretty. And every person I see on the street might be part of the Brainy Elite. They must have the sort of brains who can keep their shit together.

I should probably talk to Inga now and stop rambling to myself. #SOCIALISE

Last But Not Least: Day Eleven

I never knew I liked cider. Until today.
It’s only cider, but it puts my life upside down. Well, maybe not exactly upside down. Maybe it just shook the ground I built my life on a little bit. Like a tiny, drunk earthquake. What if cider is not the only thing I thought tasted awful but actually turns out tob e rather delicious? Didn’t I have the same epiphany with ginger ale in Matamata two summers ago? What about all the books I promised myself never to read? It scares me that some day in boredom I might pick up a copy of Shades of Grey and like it!

It’s really weird to love something I swore to hate. It makes me want to raise my glass to changes of the heart, to second impressions and to my mind doing its best not to be set on one opinion. Cheers to the earthquakes that make me think.

Shit I Bought in London

Last week I was fortunate enough to visit London again. I went with my gorgeous friend Anna who you can find on her blog: www.tinytrinket.wordpress.com. It‘s a lovely little internet niche and you should totes have a look!

DSC08807

Because we have both visited England‘s capital a bunch of times we did hardly any sightseeing. Instead we drank lots of tea, ate cupcakes, went for strolls and got stuck in the shops. I‘m not much of a shopper when it comes to clothes, shoes and handbags. So when Anna tried on coats and blouses I checked out Primark‘s sock section; we went inside Topshop three times, but to even things out I dragged Anna to the Disney Store. So, as you can guess, most of the stuff I bought is utterly useless and unnecessary – but I just felt the physical need to stuff my suitcase with all the overpriced rubbish I could possibly find. Not. Regretting. Anything.

Princess Leia Mug

I can‘t even begin to tell you just how excited I am about this mug! I mean, just look at the buns! Aren‘t they fabulous?!

Giant Crumpets

I also bought regular ones, of course, but I could not resist the temptation of one massive chunk of happiness!

The Iron Trial (by Cassandra Clare & Holly Black)

IMG_20160221_150842

It was raining and we found shelter inside a Waterstones store, and oops-a-daisy I ended up buying a shitty YA Harry Potter rip-off with a romance twist, and I‘m really looking forward to reading it!

Harry Potter Jandals

20160221_150941

Looking back, I seriously can‘t remember why I bought these. I suppose I saw them and just held on to them without even checking the size.

Postcards

Did I mention my love for crumpets? And check out this hamster, he‘s a real hero!

William & Kate Mug

20160221_151248

Strictly speaking this is some Shit-I-bought-in-Brighton-last-summer item, but it‘s terrible enough to get a mention here. I pretty much just scanned all the souvenir shops for the most dreadful mug and then bought it for myself. I greatly enjoy drinking out of it, though. It gives me a sensation of roalty.

Socks

20160221_150635

I have this very weird obsession with socks. I buy socks whenever I‘m bored because I have to wait for a train or someone is late meeting me. At least they keep my feet warm, so they are not completely useless.

Rapunzel Plush Doll

20160221_151120

Another weird thing I do is collect plushy Disney Princess dolls. Basically, everytime someone I know goes somewhere they have a Disney Store they have to bring me back one of these dolls.

Aluminium Foil

There are cats on this foil. Sandwiches will never taste the same again!

Hummingbird Bakery Cupcake

DSC08832

I am a massive fan of the Hummingbird Bakery. I own two of their books, they make beautiful cupcakes and cakes and all other sorts of edible things. So naturally, when we passed one of their stores I had to go inside and treat myself. I bought their Blackbottom Cupcake which, technically, was absolutely delicious. But because we‘d just had a big lunch fifteen minutes before I was still stuffed. So for a day and a half I carried around a half eaten cupcake in the hope to eventually finishing it. Which I did, but by that time it was squashed.

I‘m going to end this list here, mainly because I do not want to appear like some weirdo who can‘t control herself. But also because I‘m stuck with the flu and looking at a screen for too long makes me all dizzy. I hope everyone‘s been having a lovely weekend!

Lots of love from the roots of my heart!
xxx

Ps. I ALMOST FORGOT! Remember how I went to Hannover a little while ago? Well, Inga made a small video (because she is that awesome) and that‘s my sole reason for creating a Youtube channel, so if you have three minutes to spare have a look at it!

A letter to J.R.R. Tolkien as found on his grave in Oxford

Dear Pro. Tolkien & Mrs. Tolkien:

Thanks a lot for the Middle Earth.
Thank you for everything in the magical world.
Thank you for Legolas, thank you for Bilbo Baggins, thank you for Frodo, thank you for the Silmarillion.

Wish God bless both of you.
Happiness and peaceful forever.

Last But Not Least: Day Six

Bild 99

We went to Stonehenge today, and I loved it. It‘s a funny feeling, getting excited about stones. But just think, those lifeless junks of rock surpassed the ages of history. All the wars, the storms, the crises, all the malice in the world could not push them from where they are stood.

And just think, all the people that come to visit, so desperate for a little bit of mystery, for the proof of magic. And those unmoving stones just keep standing in a circle, casting shadows and marking the sinking of the sun, they are all the proof some of us need.

Just think, maybe the stones are not special at all, maybe people just made them so. Maybe fairy tales exist for those who believe in them and who are willing to look at things as if they really are magical.
Just think, maybe that is the real power of the stones.

Meet: Ayden

Bild 31

Ayden in three words: Bubbly, Loving, Organised
Ayden’s dream dinner party guests: Katie Perry, Banksy, Tim Burton
Ayden’s favourite posts: My Tattoo Tour, Family Portrait
Ayden reads: A Rosie Outlook, Miss Westend Girl, From Gem With Love

ayden

While in Glasgow I met up with the gorgeous Ayden from the Little Blog of Horrors. We had coffee (well, she did – I had the best Chai Latte everrr!) in a café called Tinder Box (they didn’t bribe me, their Chai was truly amazing!). Ayden is a very upbeat lady who started her blog way back at uni where she was supposed to write about her experiences and reflections, and somehow she never stopped. Her blog, The little Blog of Horrors, talks about all the bits and bobs of everyday life – holidays, make-up, cats, tattoos… it is basically a «big old collection of everything,» as she puts it. «I suffer from anxiety a lot,» she says, «and that is a topic I would very much like to talk about in one of my future posts. If I could help anybody get through it by sharing my own experiences, that would be wonderful!»

Ayden’s most loyal reader is her boyfriend who proofreads each of her posts. «He’s my blog secretary,» she jokes. But then again she pressures that her blog is all about her enjoying it. While for now it’s «just» a part time hobby, whether or not she’ll one day do it full time, Ayden is still unsure. «I’m loving what I’m doing and that is the main thing I never want to change. What is the point in doing something if you hate it? People, they wait a lifetime for happiness, and they just don’t realise that happiness is the journey and not the destination – I think that’s something I would like to say to everybody!» She takes a sip from her coffee and sheepishly adds, «Also, eat a meal without taking a picture first!» That actually makes me blush, because if you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I can hardly have an early morning snuggle with my cat without having the whole world know – let alone eat cake! But on that note I put her to the test: Belgian chocolate or Swiss chocolate? There is only one real answer (don’t give me evils, you know it’s true!). Ayden couldn’t have answered in a better way: «Swiss chocolate! Because I tried Belgian chocolate when I went to Belgium last year and it made me sick!»

When talking about food I always remember that one quote from John Green that says, «like God Himself cooked heaven into a series of five dishes»; Ayden is one of the lucky few to have tasted something that deserves this divine description. «It’s got to be my mum’s Christmas dinner! She does a beautiful beef filet with mashed potatoes, and oh god! It’s so delicious that I made it for my boyfriend’s birthday when I tried to win him over!» And obviously she succeeded, so hand over the recipe already, Ayden!

Being quite the adventurer it doesn’t come as a surprise that Ayden loves Adventure Time. If, like me, you have lived behind the moon for the past years and don’t know what in the name of sanity Adventure Time is – it’s a comic. It features a dog. Ask Ayden, she knows all about it! Make her summarise it. Or act it out. What I learned from her that day is that there are two main characters called Finn and Jake the Dog, and they go on adventures together, and if she could make them come to life, Ayden would join them, and they would give her advice on life and on how to be happy! Now I want to meet them to! Although, talking to Ayden, she doesn’t sound like somebody who needs to be taken on an adventure, she seems to be doing fine on her own! «A while ago I went surfing in Cornwall,» she remembers. «Suddenly the water went very still and it got really dark and the sky just lit up! I thought I was going to die out there, but at the same time it was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever experienced!»

There is an utter genuity about Ayden; «I love the word Irie,» she tells me. «It’s Jamaican and it kinda means “all right”. It’s just a very positive word, and that is something I want to hang on to in spite of all my struggles: Positiveness!»

Last But Not Least: Day One

Bild 26

London is a blur. I arrived, and it wasn‘t on Platform 9 3/4, and it wasn‘t magical. Just the crowded station of St. Pancras; anouncements, suitcases being pushed and pulled past me, a child crying, two lovers hugging, the music coming from some shop. I circled the top floor of the station and I circled the lower floor and when I was completely lost in my circle, Inga finally found me. She is very good at finding me (I should ask her how she does it, because I keep losing myself).

It‘s good to be nibbling at a Waggon Wheel at midnight in a stranger‘s kitchen when your thoughts slowly turn into dreams.
